How area codes work
Area codes, time zones and calling
Where does this list come from?
From the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), which assigns area codes for the US, Canada and the Caribbean. We use NANPA's area-code database, file date November 7, 2026: every code it marks as geographic and in service, with its in-service date, overlay group and time zone. NANPA's Canadian entries match the Canadian Numbering Administrator's list.
Toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) and other non-geographic codes aren't tied to a place, so the lookup tells you what they are instead. Caribbean countries share the +1 numbering plan but have their own time zones and rules.
Which area codes span more than one time zone?
41 area codes cover more than one time zone. For calling hours, that means the code alone can't tell you the person's local time, so a careful dialer calls only when the window is open in every zone the code covers.

What's an overlay?
When a region runs out of numbers, NANPA adds a new code to the same area instead of splitting it. New numbers get the new code, existing ones keep theirs, and everyone dials ten digits. That's why one city can have four or five area codes, all with the same time zone and the same rules.
For local presence, any code in the overlay looks local: a Manhattan resident sees 212 and 646 as neighbors.
Does an area code tell you where someone is?
It tells you where the number was issued, not where the person is. Mobile numbers move with their owners, so a 212 number can belong to someone in Denver. For calling hours, use the address on file when you have one; Oregon's law expressly lets callers rely on a cell phone's area code, but most states don't say.
Get a number in a lead's area code
People are more likely to pick up a number they recognize. With TopReach local presence, you add numbers in the area codes you call, at $10 a month each, and every call shows the lead the one from their area code, or else one from their state or province, with the same number on every follow-up and callbacks to the rep who called.
